Automatically Lock iPhone When Put Down

Worried about leaving your iPhone unlocked when you set it down? With iOS 18, you can now make your device lock automatically when it’s not in use — adding an extra layer of protection without any effort. This feature uses Face ID, motion detection, and proximity sensors to secure your phone the moment you walk away or place it on a surface.

Step 1: Open Settings

Go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your passcode. Make sure Face ID is already enabled and working for unlocking your iPhone.

Step 2: Enable Attention & Lock Detection

Scroll down to find “Attention & Lock Detection” under the Face ID options. Toggle it ON. This feature ensures that your iPhone stays unlocked only when you’re actively looking at the screen.

Step 3: Adjust Auto-Lock Timing

Navigate to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock and select a short time interval, such as 30 seconds or 1 minute. This determines how quickly your screen locks when idle.

Step 4: Use Raise-to-Wake Smartly

If you use Raise to Wake, go to Settings > Display & Brightness and ensure it’s enabled. This lets you wake your phone quickly without compromising security — Face ID will only unlock once it recognizes your face.

Step 5: Test the Automatic Lock

Set your phone on a table and walk a few feet away. After a short delay, the screen should dim and lock automatically. When you pick it up again, Face ID will instantly authenticate and unlock your device.

Extra Privacy Measures

  • Go to Settings > Privacy & Security and review access permissions for apps that stay active when locked.
  • Enable Require Attention for Face ID to make sure your phone only unlocks when you’re looking directly at it.
  • Combine this with Lock After 1 Minute in Auto-Lock for best security.

OnePlus Tip

For an even more seamless experience, combine Auto-Lock with Attention-Aware Features under Settings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention. Your iPhone will automatically detect when you’re not using it and secure itself faster — perfect for offices, public places, or shared environments.
