Enable Voice Control for Hands-Free iPhone Use in North America

If you want to use your iPhone completely hands-free—whether while driving, cooking, or multitasking—Voice Control on iOS 18 gives you full access to your device through spoken commands. Here’s how to enable, customize, and master Voice Control using only your voice.

1. Enable Voice Control from Settings

Voice Control is built into iOS 18 and available across North America without requiring additional downloads.

To turn it on:

  1. Open SettingsAccessibility.

  2. Scroll to Voice Control and tap it.

  3. Toggle Voice Control ON.

  4. Wait a few seconds for your iPhone to download the language model (only needed the first time).

Once enabled, a small blue microphone icon appears in the top-right corner of your screen—indicating your iPhone is actively listening for commands.

2. Set Up Voice Commands

You can issue basic commands such as:

  • “Open Safari”

  • “Go Home”

  • “Swipe left”

  • “Tap Send”

  • “Scroll down”

To explore all commands:

  • Go to Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control → Customize Commands.

  • Browse categories like Basic Navigation, Text Editing, and Device.

You can also create your own custom commands:

  1. Tap Customize Commands → Create New Command.

  2. Enter a phrase (e.g., “Check battery”).

  3. Choose Action → Run Custom Gesture or Run Shortcut if you want advanced automation.

3. Improve Accuracy with Language and Region

For U.S. and Canadian English users:

  • Go to Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control → Language.

  • Select English (United States) or English (Canada) for best recognition accuracy.

  • Make sure Siri is set to the same language under Settings → Siri & Search → Language.

4. Use Voice Control with Siri and Shortcuts

You can combine Voice Control with Siri or the Shortcuts app to achieve deeper automation:

  • Say “Hey Siri, open Notes” → then use Voice Control to dictate or format text.

  • Create a Shortcut for frequently used actions (e.g., turning on Wi-Fi, texting someone) → then assign it to a custom voice command.

5. Disable Temporarily or Fully

If you want to pause Voice Control:

  • Say “Go to sleep” → this suspends listening.

  • Say “Wake up” → to reactivate it.

To fully turn it off:
Settings → Accessibility → Voice Control → Toggle OFF

OnePlus Tip 💡

If Voice Control sometimes fails to recognize your commands, reset Siri’s learning data:
Go to Settings → Siri & Search → Siri & Dictation History → Delete Siri & Dictation History.
Then, retrain both Siri and Voice Control with your normal speaking tone—this drastically improves accuracy on iOS 18.
