Protect iPhone from Unauthorized Access in Public Wi-Fi Networks (iOS 18 Guide)

Public Wi-Fi networks are convenient, but they can also expose your iPhone to hackers, fake hotspots, and data interception. With iOS 18, Apple added new security layers to help protect your personal information while browsing in cafés, airports, or hotels across North America. Here’s how to keep your device safe and private on public Wi-Fi.

1. Verify the Network Before Connecting

Before joining any Wi-Fi, confirm its official name with the venue staff — attackers often create fake networks using similar names. Once confirmed, go to Settings → Wi-Fi → choose the correct network → tap Connect.

2. Use Private Wi-Fi Address

iOS 18 automatically randomizes your device’s MAC address for privacy. To make sure it’s on: Settings → Wi-Fi → (Your Network) → Private Wi-Fi Address → ON.

This prevents network administrators or trackers from identifying your iPhone across different hotspots.

3. Enable Limit IP Address Tracking

Open Settings → Wi-Fi → (Your Network) and toggle Limit IP Address Tracking to ON. This feature routes data through Apple’s private relay servers (for iCloud+ users), hiding your IP location from snoopers.

4. Disable Auto-Join for Public Networks

Go to Settings → Wi-Fi → tap the info (ℹ️) icon next to the public network → turn off Auto-Join. This ensures your iPhone doesn’t automatically reconnect later without your consent.

5. Turn On VPN or iCloud Private Relay

For added security, use a VPN or enable Apple’s Private Relay (available for iCloud+ users): Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Private Relay → ON.

These tools encrypt your browsing activity, preventing network operators from viewing your data or visited sites.

6. Forget Networks You No Longer Use

Old Wi-Fi connections can store credentials or allow tracking. To clear them: Settings → Wi-Fi → Edit → Forget This Network.

OnePlus Tip

Never access banking or sensitive accounts on public Wi-Fi — instead, use your cellular data or a trusted hotspot. Keep Automatic Software Updates enabled under Settings → General → Software Update to stay protected from the latest network vulnerabilities in iOS 18.
